Olivia Thomas joins The Transportation Consultancy in Birmingham

We are delighted to welcome Olivia Thomas to The Transportation Consultancy (ttc) as a Senior Transport Planner. With a rich background in transport planning and engineering, Olivia brings a unique skill set and vibrant personality to the team.

Beginning her career at Peter Brett Associates as an apprentice transport planner, and transitioning into an engineering apprenticeship when the company was acquired by Stantec, Olivia gained diverse experience across varied sectors and projects. In 2022, she joined BWB Consulting as a Transport Planner, and now she joins ttc as Senior Transport Planning Consultant.

George Bailes, Managing Director, says,

“I’m delighted to have Olivia joining ttc.  Not only does she bring great depth to the Birmingham team,  she is also increasing the teams diversity, which brings vast benefits to any projects she works on. Forming an integral part of the Birmingham office, her experience, dedication and superb attitude to Transport Planning will add tremendous value to the team, our clients and the communities we serve.”

Olivia’s journey into Transport Planning is quite unique, in that all of her qualifications are transport planning focused.  Achieving her Level 3 in Transport Planning where she gained Engineering Technician status, and then undergoing an undergraduate degree in Transport Planning at Aston University, being a part of the first cohort in the country to have this degree.

During her degree, she carried out a focus project on ‘Dutch engineering for cycle infrastructure in the UK’. This project took her to Holland and Germany to research continental road designs that support cycle use. This knowledge, experience and understanding was then used to support the redesign of Doncaster City Council’s cycle routes in line with LTN 1/20, which was a particular highlight of her Transport Planning journey so far.

As someone who grew up in the Midlands, Olivia is most proud of the impact and support she has supplied to local projects, such as the Black Country Local Plan, Worcestershire Hospital Trust Sustainable Transport Strategy, Birmingham City University and plenty of residential schemes in Leicestershire. Being based in ttc’s Birmingham office, she is looking forward to continuing to make an impact in the Midlands.

Joining ttc, clients can expect to benefit instantly from the dedicated way in which Olivia has taken her path into Transport Planning. Having this specialised route into the sector brings something special to everything that Olivia gets involved with. She will support and head up projects with clients all across the UK – liaising across teams and directly with stakeholders to bring her expert advice and experience into each and every project. She also has an ambition to pass on her experience by supporting junior staff with their personal development.

Olivia comments,

“Starting my career as a technician, I have a strong background in designing in AutoCAD and spatial analysis in QGIS. I am a bit of handy man when it comes to transport planning as I can design, model, write reports and really support others in the team. My future plans are to pursue MSoRSA status, as I have a special interest in road safety analysis and to reach Incorporated Transport Planner status.”

Even though Olivia has a clear passion for Transport Planning, she says herself, she’s not just a “boring Transport Planner”, she’s high energy, bubbly and outgoing. When she meets people, along with her big brummie personality, they find her approachable, down to earth and easy to communicate with. Olivia ensures that all her clients and stakeholders feel comfortable, listened to and understood, which enables her to deliver to the projects or clients goals.

Olivia comments,

“ttc are a really exciting, fresh company, and a place I’m super energised about contributing too and building upon the companies already huge successes. ttc’s vision aligns with my values, and it’s really refreshing to be around such like-minded people.”

George Bailes, Managing Director, continues,

“Olivia is a great fit for the company and it was clear she shares the same culture as the ‘ttc’ brand which made it an easy decision to appoint her. Olivia has already made a positive impact and settled in seamlessly. We wish you every success in your career Olivia and welcome to the TTC family.”
